As a general rule, you may ONLY read messages which are located
in OPEN message folders. The exception is reading [M]arked mail
which will show you messages in CLOSED folders as well. New
messages addressed TO you since your last logon are automatically
marked for reading at logon, and ALL messages TO you may be mass
marked at any time using the Message Menu command [C]heck for
personal mail, followed by reading [M]arked mail.
When reading messages, WILDCAT! presents mail in chronological
order by default. This order may be changed to "folder-by-
folder" order by following the read subcommand with an
exclaimation point (!). Areas supporting folder based reading
are indicated below.
Choices available after selecting the [R]ead message prompt
include:
[####]
Entering a number allows reading to start at that specific
message number. If reading is started by number, it
continues in chronological order until stopped or the end of
the message database is reached. Reading by number may be
changed to read in folder order by entering a number
followed by the exclaimation point (!) such as 385!. If the
selected message is private, or has been deleted, you are
shown the next highest message number available to you.
Using the ! for folder oriented reading always begins with
folder "A" (or the first open folder), at the first message
equal to or above the selected message number. Therefore,
if message 385 is actually in folder "C", the first message
actually read will be the first message in folder "A" with a
higher number than 385. Message number 385 will be
presented as the first message viewed when folder "A" and
"B" are exhausted.
Numeric reading defaults to forward reading, but may be done
in reverse by following the message number with a minus sign
(385-). Reading by folder is also supported in reverse
mode, but the ! MUST be the second item entered, between the
number and the - sign such as 385!-
[S]ince
Reading messages [S]ince presents all mail which has been
entered since the last message you read. The default order
is chronological, but may be changed to folder-by-folder by
adding the ! character after the [S]ince command, i.e., S!.
Using S! will present all new mail starting with the newest
in folder "A" (if open and available to you), followed by
folder "B" and so on.
[T]o
Allows reading all messages addressed to you which have not
been deleted. Reading is always done in forward
chronological order and ONLY displays messages in OPEN
folders.
[F]rom
Allows reading all messages authored by you which have not
been deleted. Reading is always done in forward
chronological order and ONLY displays messages in OPEN
folders.
[M]arked
New mail addressed to you since your last logon is
automatically marked by WILDCAT! during each login. The
easiest way to quickly read only the mail for you is to
select [M]arked mail. Mail may also be marked for reading
with the Message Menu command [C]heck for personal mail
which marks ALL mail addressed TO you. Reading is always
done in forward chronological order and may not be altered.
Reading [M]arked mail does not move your "last message read"
marker unless no additional mail is read later during the
same call. This allows you to first read [M]arked mail, and
then go back later in the session and read mail by number or
[S]ince. If [M]arked mail is read and no additional reading
is done, the "last message read" marker will be set to the
highest [M]arked mail read when you logoff.
